Set against a dizzying cliff, crowned by its citadel and the bulbous silhouette of its Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, Dinant makes for one of the most beautiful postcards in Belgium. Tucked between the Meuse and the rock, the little Walloon town is best discovered along the water, on a cruise or from the Charles-de-Gaulle bridge with its famous colourful saxophones. For it was here that Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, was born — celebrated throughout the town. The citadel, reached by cable car or by 408 steps, offers a breathtaking view over the valley. Nearby, the Bayard Rock and the Merveilleuse cave round off an escape full of character.
